Living Willow Structures
A popular use for willow is to plant live withies to create garden features, play domes and fedges (a cross between a hedge and a fence). At the Yarner Trust we grow willow which is used in our living willow courses. This is a popular course which we run each year and on our land we have created a play dome which is used by visiting school children for story time or play, an arbour in the garden for shelter and a “fedge” for screening. The course in 2010 built a living willow “fedge” to provide shelter and security.

Varieties
The variety of willow that we use is called Tora, this is a vinimalis which is vigorous, easy to root and provides plenty of leaves on the stems. We sell cuttings so that you can grow your own supply of living willow or to grow for quick growing trees to fill space or for fuel. We can also supply a limited number of live rods to create your own living willow structure.

Living willow is planted in the spring. Rods between 8 and 10 foot long are buried into the soil, woven as required and left to root. Success depends on how well the site is prepared but your structure only needs to be clipped to keep it tidy and lightly pruned in the spring.

Instructions
Our cuttings and rods are supplied with planting instructions but you may like to come on our living willow or cultivation and uses of willow courses for more information and to share ideas.

Prices
In 2011 we will have living willow rods available for collection from the Yarner Trust during February and March.
Cost per rod: up to 3m (10ft) £1.00 per rod; over 3m (10ft) £1.50 per rod.
