At the Well Farm Willow Beds we grow a variety of willows which can be used for basket making, garden structures and living willow structures. Different varieties grow to different heights for example our Tora can grow up to 5m (15 ft) in a year, but our slender basket making willows will only grow to about 1.5m (5 ft). During the spring we can supply cuttings which are easy to grow and give you a supply of willow for your own use.
Planting
Cuttings are supplied as 30cm (12”) slips which are harvested and sent by first class post. Ideally ground needs to be freshly prepared and weed free. Stick approx 1/3rd of the cutting into the ground and they should root readily and can be coppiced from the first year. The more robust stock will need little maintenance but the smaller basket making willows will need to be kept weed free.

Despatch
Cuttings are harvested and dispatched in the first week of March. They come with full planting instructions.
For 2010/2011 we have the following varieties available. These are used extensively on our courses and by our students.
Dicky Meadow: A fantastic old fashioned basket making willow. A lovely lime green when fresh and dries to an attractive grey colour. Wonderful to use in hedgerow baskets.
Lancashire Dicks: Another great basket making willow. Dries to an attractive red orange and also good in hedgerow baskets.
Whissender: A larger all round basket making willow. It can be dried and resoaked and is good for larger items.
Eugenii: Green mottled stems with attractive red leaf buds and pink catkins. Great for projects where strong straight sticks are required.
Daphanoides: Everyones favourite willow. Deep red stems and wonderful white catkins. Good as a garden plant, or interplanted in living willow structures.
Noir de Villaine: A traditional French basket making willow with deep brown stems. The bark can be stripped to reveal pure white willow for use in baskets.
Tora: Vigorous and fast growing. This is the variety we use both on our living willow courses and as rods for sale. This can grow up to 15ft in a year but is reliable, roots easily and branches nicely for weaving in side shoots.
