Summary
A yurt is the traditional circular home of the nomadic tribes of SE Asia. It is portable, durable and a fine example of a sustainable dwelling. Use it as a workshop space, a summer house, or as a luxurious means of camping. Learn the skills and make the components for your own 12’ yurt frame.
More Information
This course concentrates on making a 12’ diameter yurt frame based on the Kirgis style. The first three days will be dedicated to making both the wheel, involving preparing the two ash halves, steam bending, riveting and cleaning up, and the roof ribs which will require stripping willow sticks and shaping with drawknives before steam bending.
These processes involve a certain amount of skill, but if you don’t have the appropriate abilities then you will learn, and if you can’t learn then there will be help,on hand. On previous courses there has always been a great deal of teamwork, sharing and mutual helping.
By the end of the course (part 2 being on 15th and 16th May) you should have a completed wheel and all the roof ribs. With a fair wind you will have prepared the willow sticks for the trellis walls and made a start on their assembly.
You will be given all the information you need to complete the rest of your yurt.
