Summary
Design and create your own stone carving with tutor Tim Harvey. Tim is a master carver, stone mason and sculptor. He has worked on many cathedrals and churches around the world for 26 years, and is very experienced at running workshops at festivals and other events.
More Information
Tim Harvey did his masonry apprenticeship in 1983 beginning in Portland, Dorset with it’s wonderful limestone and trained with master-mason John Sheppard. To complete his apprenticeship he went to work on Wells Cathedral in Somerset and after four years became foreman.
After leaving Wells, he went to work in Bath for various stone masonry companies as a self employed carver. Since then he has travelled the world working on churches, cathedrals and mosques. Recently he has concentrated on private commissions, workshops and teaching the ancient craft of stone carving.
The weekend will start with a health and safety induction followed by instruction of how to use tools and information about the stone provided. Students will be working in Bath limestone, which is quite soft and easy to carve although finer details are not quite so easy to achieve. Most students will finish their carvings at the end of the course but they can take the stone home to be developed and finished.
