Escape to this hidden gem – a remote, historical village nestling within a wild and dramatic coastal  landscape on the border of North Devon and Cornwall.

Just one mile from the sea at Welcombe Mouth, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and  secluded within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Welcombe offers the complete escape.

We’ll share with you our intimate knowledge of this unique landscape, allowing you to enjoy the very best that North Devon has to offer.

Creative Break : The Ecology of the Landscape

ROCKS, MINERALS AND CRYSTALS (3 days)

A practical introduction to Earth’s history taking in the remarkable rock formations exposed around the seashore of Welcombe mouth. We photograph and collect samples of rocks, and learn how to identify their various constituents. This will lead to a study of the medieval foundation of Welcombe Barton and it’s nearby church.

ROCKS, SOILS AND HABITATS (2days)

Spend a morning looking at landforms and the range of habitats on sea cliffs and in the Marsland Valley SSSI. After a picnic lunch, witness the effects of conservation management on the ecology of culm grassland and with luck see the rare marsh fritillary butterfly. The following day will be spent exploring the unique flora and fauna of Braunton Burrows, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. 2007

Creative Break : A Woolly Weekend

NATURAL DYEING - Friday 18th September

Rosie will take you through the different stages required to create a rainbow of colours from plant materials. Gather flowers and leaves from the dye garden here as well as using additional dyes from abroad. Take home a basket full of beautiful colours

CREATIVE SPINNING - Saturday 19th September

This day is designed for people with a basic knowledge of hand spinning who would like to extend their skills to create coloured and textured s yarns from naturally dyed fleece. Using special carding and plying techniques you will be able to design and make different yarns to weave, knit or stitch with.

CREATIVE KNITTING – Sunday 20th September

Throw away your conventional patterns and discover how to make exciting garments using scraps of different textured wool. Use some of the beautifully dyed and spun yarns you have created on the weekend or something from the wide range of commercial yarns that are available today.

Accommodation

Welcombe Barton has a wood burning stove, original flag stone flooring, exposed oak beams and wooden floors with 4 bedrooms –  single, twin bedded, family room (1 double 1 single bed) and a triple bedded room (3 singles). Lounge with dining table, grade II listed settle, kitchen, dairy and family bathroom. 4 acre field with Celtic Roundhouse, and living willow play dome. (No TV or dishwasher, and no mobile phone reception – it's a genuine get-away!)
