Tim Williams, Area Youth Worker for Devon County Youth Service, inspired 12 young people to build their own yurt, whilst camping at The Yarner Trust in Welcombe in April.
Tim’s innovative yak and yurt project encourages young people from a wide area of Devon to work co-operatively and develop survival skills. At the end of it all, the group had made a 12 foot Mongolian style yurt, ready for its first outing at the Green Field in Glastonbury where spoon carving will be demonstrated.
Yarner tutor David Baker expressed his delight at the commitment, enthusiasm and skill that the 15 year olds from Chulmleigh Community College displayed during the week. The group not only learned a wide range of green woodworking skills, but also visited the dramatic coastline at Welcombe Mouth, entertained themselves with evening campfire sessions and enjoyed the Yarner Trust’s historic buildings and locally grown organic food.
